Napa Valley is America’s most celebrated wine region. It was officially recognized for its high-quality wines and distinctive regional terroir when it became California’s first American Viticultural Area (AVA) in 1981. But it was five years earlier that the region gained international notoriety for beating out French wines in blind tastings in both red and white categories during the 1976 Judgment of Paris.
